June 12, 1898 is a treasured date in Philippine history.
It was on this day that General Emilio Aguinaldo
declared at the balcony of his Cavite residence
the independence of the Philippines from
the colonial rule of Spain.

This is also a day that reminds us that we Filipinos
are freedom-loving people with dreams and aspirations
to excel and succeed in our fields of endeavors.
We have the freedom to choose our destinies.
Freedom to choose between employment
and self-employment.

Filipinos in the United States have gone a long
way in this superb country from limited farm work
during the early years of migration. We are now
visible either as employees in various fields of
employment or as entrepreneurs. Hence,
we Filipino-Americans are vast economic
contributors of communities we reside in
through our commendable perseverance
in our jobs or businesses.

We are more prosperous nowadays than early
Filipino immigrants who had limited opportunities
such as farm workers that toiled rigidly to make
ends meet. And this is evident through the
dynamic buying power of Filipino-Americans today.

Although home ownership is the American Dream,
majority of Filipinos are striving more to achieve
the "Ultimate American Dream" -- small business
ownership or attainment of the peak
of employment goals.

We are looking forward that all of us
Filipino-Americans would achieve our goals
and continue making our dreams into a reality.

On this day of commemoration and celebration
of the Philippine Independence, we would like to
